Arsene Wenger remains defiant that the gunners will be able to challenge for the title in the upcoming campaign.
Many have questioned the quality within Arsenal to sustain a title challenge over the course of the campaign, but Wenger feels that the team has substantially improved in recent years. This is demonstrated by the back-to-back FA Cup titles that the club has managed to achieve. However, these titles have come against lesser teams in the form of Hull City and Aston Villa. Arsenal have not beaten a top team in the final of a major competition nor have they been in contention for the league title throughout the season.
In the case of last campaign, Arsenal were left looking at Chelsea win the title quite comfortably with a 12 point advantage over the London outfit. Wenger expects a much improved performance in the league from his team. However, Arsenal have made just one major signing in this transfer window. Petr Cech, who spent much of last season as the backup to Thibaut Courtois at Chelsea, has arrived for £ 10 million, but he remains a world-class goalkeeper nonetheless. Apart from the shot stopper, Arsenal are yet to make some important signings.
Wenger reckons that there is still time left in the transfer window.“I don’t close the door if we find any player who can strengthen the squad. We have already strengthened the squad, but I believe part of the success of the squad is also the level of cohesion. We have a good level of cohesion. I believe we have the quality, and it’s now about how much we can be stronger together. We felt at the end of last season that we had moved forward, but it is still not enough. In this pre-season we have to move forward again,” said Wenger.
